生物学家指出，在自然状态下，物种灭绝的种数与新物种出现的种数基本上是平衡的。但是随着人口的增加和经济的发展，这种平衡已经受到破坏。据专家们估计，从恐龙灭绝以来，当前地球上生物多样性损失的速度比历史上任何时候都快，鸟类和哺乳动物现在的灭绝速度或许是它们在未受干扰的自然界中的100倍甚至1000倍。从1620xx年到1996年，世界上消失了164种鸟;从1871年到1970年，兽类灭绝了43种。地球上自有生命以来，共出现过25亿种动植物，其中有将近1/2是在最近3个世纪内消失的。
地球上的生物不可能单独生存，在一定环境条件下，它们是相互联系、共同生活的。为了保持地球生物的多样性，保护野生动物资源，各个国家都非常重视。
